Blue Reflections

The older the ice is in a glacier, the more compressed it is, and therefore the more blue it is – which makes this iceberg a gift from many centuries ago! I love the varieties of blue in this scene, from aqua to denim blue to deep indigo.

By the Sea

A long expsoure captured such lovely movement in the ocean’s wave in this photograph. The lava formation, eroded over centuries and left alone on the beach, makes me think of fairy tales: could it be a troll’s house? I was fortunate to have a fog bank roll into the landscape, obscuring the headlands behind it, and providing a soft background upon which the viewer could project their own stories of sea monsters and mermaids. Still Waters

These towering sea stacks are called Reynisdrangar, and rise dramatically out of the stormy Atlantic Ocean at the end of a beautiful black sand beach. Legend has it that two trolls saw a three-masted ship at night and tried to drag it to shore…but when dawn broke, the trolls and the ship were turned into stone. I made a seven-minute exposure, which resulted in a scene of peacefulness and tranquility. (Yes, Reynisdrangar was featured in Game of Thrones. I knew you’d ask).

Giant's Boot

I couldn't resist this sea stack! If giants roam the earth anywhere, then it definitely is in Iceland. I stood on a cliff looking down at this rock formation near the shore; you can see the lovely greens in the water, indicating a shallower depth.

Volcanic Red

I love the repeating curves in this photograph - the half-circle created by the jutting boulders, echoed by the curve of the mountainside in the background.

Iceberg Fantasy

If I was forced to photograph only one thing for the rest of my life, then icebergs would be near the top of my list. I love the drama of icebergs calving from glaciers, as well as the peacefulness of icebergs floating in a calm sea. What a range of emotions an iceberg can evoke! I was drawn to the high-key pastels of this scene, and felt, as I was photographing it, that I was truly in a wonderland of ice.

Angel in the Falls

The blue of the glaciated river, the red-tinged darkness of the lava cliffs, and the orange, crimson and gold of the autumn foliage make a spectacular frame for the waterfall itself, whose shape on the left looks angelic to me. I photographed this scene at Hruanfossar in Iceland.

Translucence

I had no idea that an iceberg could look like it was lit from within by a lamp. Thank you for the blessing of light refraction! The long exposure I chose caused the reflection of the iceberg in the ocean water to stretch like taffy, a beautiful effect I had not expected.

Iceberg Interior

In Iceland, there is a beach called Breidamerkursandur, whose black lava sands are the perfect backdrop to the jewel-toned icebergs that are often washed ashore there. I was able to walk up and touch this iceberg, and I loved exploring and photographing the incredible shapes trapped in its frozen interior.
